Landscaping & Horticulture


This high skills major will focus on all areas of landscape design, construction and maintenance as it relates to residential, commercial, industrial and recreational business.  Students will gain practical experience with use of various types of materials, processes and techniques used in the landscape and horticultural industry.  Teachers will provide opportunities for certifications and experiences outside of the classroom.

Certifications:

The SHSM in Primary Industries: Horticulture and Landscaping requires students to complete five (5) sector-recognized certifications and/or training courses. Of these, four (4) are in areas that are compulsory and the remaining one (1) from the list of additional certification packages.  Possible certifications are listed below.

Four (4) Compulsory

Standard First Aid
Level A CPR
WHMIS
Plant Identification
One (1) Certified Horticultural Technician (CHT) package of training courses from the list below:

CHT Maintenance
(21” Mower, 36” Mower, Edging and Trimming, Pruning)

CHT Construction Installation
(Plant layout, Grading and Drainage, Paver Installation)

CHT Garden Center
(Cash Handling, Phone Etiquette, Customer Etiquette)

CHT Maintenance Installation
(Tree Planting, Grading and Sodding,Work Orders)
