Visual Art Activities (provided by Micky Renders)
The Visual Arts at TAS continues to offer a welcoming, affirming and inclusive
environment where everyone is supported in their artistic growth no matter what their
level of ability.
Photography Exhibition
Our second year of Grade 11 Photography has been very exciting. After learning how to
use both film and digital cameras we teamed with the Peterborough Health Unit to
mount and anti cancer campaign. Please join our opening celebration the TAS Library
on Feb.13th at lunch . There will be judging for the best poster and refreshments will be
served.
Peace Tent
The painting of a Peace Tent began this past week in Ms. Renders art class. This is the start
of a project to encourage the Peterborough community to respond to the humanitarian
crisis in Darfur, Sudan by participating in the decoration of a canvas refugee tent --with
images of hope, love, freedom, humanity, and peace --and to raise funds for
humanitarian relief.
The theme for the tent is A Garden of Hope. We have been researching statistics on refugee
camps and the situation in Darfur, which have been painted on banners that will accompany the
tent. The tent will travel around the community and to other high schools, then finally on to a
refugee camp to be used as a school or other community shelter. There will be photographs
taken throughout this process. The images documenting this journey will be exhibited publicly,
on the web etc. We will also be collecting donations for the Red Cross to support their work in
the region.
High Skills major Arts and Culture (SHSM) This is program is in its second year and
it really offers wonderful activities for the students enrolled.
Students with an interest in Visual Art have had several “reach ahead”activities this fall.
IN October we attended the Education Design Conference to explore post secondary
education in the Arts. We had the opportunity to work with local mixed media artist Anne
Renouf in a figure drawing workshop in November. In December we went to the
Haliburton School of Art where students had the choice of a photography workshop, a
mask making workshop or a wire sculpture workshop. First Aid Training was provided
for all the SHSM students.
Global Education at TAS: Stolen Childhood guest speaker: Kabba Williams
The highlight of our efforts this semester was a school wide assembly to hear Kabba
Williams tell his story, a reformed child soldier from Sierra Leone, West Africa. He
courageously spoke about the difficulties that he has experienced in his life, including
the atrocities that he was involved in as a young boy from 6-12 years old. He spoke
about his effort to become educated, and inspired us with his remarkable resilience. He
has committed his life as a Peace Activist, working tirelessly to help those 300,000
children world wide who are victimized like he was by being forced into conflict.
Upcoming events: ReFrame High School Film Program:Changing Our World: Ways of
Storytelling Friday, February 27th, 2009 8:45a.m. - 3:15p.m.
Thomas A Stewart SS will be hosting a day-long program of film showings, workshops with
professional and award-winning film makers, art projects, and poets/speakers.
This is a leadership opportunity for students in the Peterborough area interested in seeing
and responding to dynamic stories of social justice on aboriginal, international, environmental,
and equity issues, and who would also like to learn about film making that speaks out, or even
how to become engaged citizens through art. The following groups of students may be
particularly interested:
· Social Justice and Equity student groups
· Students participating in Specialist High Skills Majors in the Arts and
Culture Sector
· Students preparing ZOOM Festival entries
· Students taking World Issues, Drama, Media Studies, Civics,
Environmental Studies, Communications Technology
